Explore the splendid joy of travelling!

Hyderabad mixes 400 years of Qutb Shahi and Nizam history with a big, modern city. In one trip you can climb a hill fort, walk through a royal palace, eat in the lanes around Charminar and spend a full day at a film studio. The ten places below are the ones most first-time visitors should keep on their list.

The old city sights (Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace, Salar Jung Museum, the zoo) are close to each other, so plan them together. Golconda is in the west, and Ramoji Film City and Wonderla are on the outskirts, each needing most of a day.

1. Charminar

Charminar is the symbol of Hyderabad. Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah built it in 1591, around the time he founded the new city. The square structure has four arches and four minarets, and a small mosque sits on the top floor. You can climb the narrow stairs to the first level for a view over the busy market below.

The lanes around it are the real treat. Laad Bazaar sells glass and lac bangles, pearls are sold on Pathergatti, and small eateries serve Irani chai, Osmania biscuits and, in Ramzan, haleem. Entry is about Rs.25 for Indians and the monument is open from about 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

2. Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort stands on a granite hill on the west side of the city. It began as a mud fort under the Kakatiyas and grew into a large walled city under the Qutb Shahi kings, who made it their capital. The fort was also a famous diamond trading centre.

At the main gate, Fateh Darwaza, guides show how a hand clap below can be heard at the top of the hill. The climb to Bala Hissar at the summit takes about 30 to 45 minutes and has many steps. In the evening, a sound and light show tells the story of the fort. Entry is about Rs.25 for Indians; the show has a separate ticket.

3. Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace was the seat of the Asaf Jahi Nizams, and it is one of the best kept royal buildings in the city. The name means four palaces, and the complex has courtyards, fountains and gardens. The grand Khilwat Mubarak durbar hall has huge chandeliers and a raised marble seat called the Takht-e-Nishan.

Galleries show old clothes, weapons, crockery and photos from the Nizam's court, and a garage holds vintage cars, including an old Rolls-Royce. The palace is a short walk from Charminar. It is usually closed on Fridays, and the older ticket rate was about Rs.80 for Indians plus a camera fee.

4. Ramoji Film City

Ramoji Film City is a huge film studio and theme park at Anajpur, near Hayathnagar on the Hyderabad to Vijayawada highway, about 30 km from the city centre. It covers well over 1,600 acres and is listed by Guinness as the largest film studio complex in the world Hundreds of films have been shot here in many languages.

A day visit includes a guided bus tour of film sets, the Baahubali set, gardens, live stunt shows, a Fundustan area for kids, bird and butterfly parks and an evening parade. Keep a full day. The 2026 studio tour ticket is about Rs.1,550 for adults and Rs.1,350 for children, and the Star Experience package costs more. GoldBox Holidays runs a Ramoji Film City tour with pickup from the city.

5. Salar Jung Museum

Salar Jung Museum on the south bank of the Musi river holds one of the largest one-man collections in the world. Most items were collected by Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, known as Salar Jung III, a prime minister of the Nizam. There are over 30 galleries of paintings, statues, jade, ivory, clocks, textiles and manuscripts.

Two pieces draw the biggest crowds. The first is the Veiled Rebecca, a marble statue whose face shows through a thin carved veil. The second is a British musical clock, where a small figure comes out to strike the bell every hour. The museum is usually closed on Fridays, and entry for Indians is a modest fee.

6. Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is a white marble temple on Naubath Pahad hill, looking over Hussain Sagar. It is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara and was built by the Birla family, using marble brought from Rajasthan. The carvings mix South Indian and North Indian temple styles.

The temple is calm, clean and free to enter. Visit around sunset, when the city lights come on below. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, so leave them in your car or at the counter. The usual timings are about 7 AM to 12 PM and 3 PM to 9 PM.

7. Nehru Zoological Park

Nehru Zoological Park at Bahadurpura, near the old city, is one of the largest zoos in India. Lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, birds and reptiles live in wide, green enclosures. There is a lion safari, a nocturnal animal house, a small train for children and battery cars for people who cannot walk long distances.

Keep 3 to 4 hours and wear comfortable shoes, as the park is large. It is usually closed on Mondays. Entry is cheap for adults and children, with extra tickets for the safari and the toy train.

8. Hussain Sagar Lake

Hussain Sagar is a large lake in the heart of the city, built in the 1560s during the rule of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. It links Hyderabad and Secunderabad. A tall monolithic Buddha statue stands on a small rock in the middle of the lake.

Boats go to the statue from Lumbini Park and Eat Street. Evenings are the best time, when the Tank Bund road and Necklace Road fill with families, food carts and street lights. There is no fee to walk around the lake; boating has its own charges.

9. NTR Gardens

NTR Gardens is a city park beside Hussain Sagar, close to Lumbini Park and the Secretariat. It has lawns, a Japanese-style garden, a toy train, small rides for children and a cafe built like a tree. It is a quiet place to rest after sightseeing and fits well with a lake visit in the evening. A small entry fee is charged, and the park usually opens in the afternoon and stays open into the evening.

10. Wonderla Amusement Park

Wonderla Hyderabad is a large amusement and water park at Raviryal, close to exit 13 of the Outer Ring Road. It has dry rides such as roller coasters and drop towers, water rides, wave pools and a kids zone. Keep the whole day and carry spare clothes for the water rides, which usually open around midday.

How to Reach Hyderabad

Buses and trains arriving in Hyderabad city

Hyderabad is well connected to all major Indian cities, so getting here is easy.

By road

Direct buses run to Hyderabad from Bangalore, Chennai, Vijayawada, Vizag, Mumbai, Pune and many other cities. Families, friends and school groups can also book a city tour bus from their home town. Most buses arrive at MGBS, JBS or points on the city outskirts.

By train

Hyderabad has three main stations: Secunderabad, Hyderabad (Nampally) and Kacheguda. Trains are the most comfortable and budget-friendly way to arrive. From the station, take a cab, auto or the Hyderabad Metro to your hotel.

By air

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad has flights from all big cities. Flying costs more but saves time for sightseeing. Taxis, app cabs and airport buses take you to your hotel.

After you arrive, the one day Hyderabad city tour covers the main sights.

History of Hyderabad

Charminar monument in the old city of Hyderabad

Hyderabad has more than 400 years of history. Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded the city in 1591 on the southern bank of the Musi river. A popular legend says he named it after his beloved, Bhagmati, and the city was once also called Bhagyanagar.

Under the Qutb Shahi kings and later the Nizams, Hyderabad became a rich trading centre. It was famous for its diamond and pearl markets, which is why it is called the City of Pearls. The Charminar, built in 1591, is the city's symbol.

Today the city is known for its many languages and cultures, Nizam heritage and world-famous biryani. From palaces and forts to museums, lakes and malls, it has something for every age.

Best Time to Visit Hyderabad

Tourists at Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad in winter

Winter, from October to February, is the best time to visit Hyderabad. The weather is cool, and you can see many places in a day. Summer holidays are also busy with families, though April and May get very hot, so plan indoor sights and parks for the afternoon.

The monsoon is the least suitable time. Heavy rain often floods roads and causes long traffic jams, which wastes sightseeing hours.

What to wear

Hyderabad mixes old history with modern city life. Carry casual clothes for malls, parks and theme parks, plus modest traditional wear for temples, mosques and heritage sites.

Famous Food in Hyderabad

Plate of Hyderabadi dum biryani

Hyderabadi biryani is known across the world for its aroma and rich taste. It began in the royal kitchens of the Nizams and is now the heart of the city's food culture. Well-known biryani spots include Bawarchi, Meridian and several old restaurants around the city, each with its own loyal fans.

The Old City has served great non-vegetarian food for generations. In Ramzan, stalls there make fresh haleem, and some serve it year round. You will also find biryani, kebabs and creamy fruit salad with malai. For late-night eating, Madhapur and the Hitech City area have many food streets and cafes.

Eating, shopping and sightseeing go hand in hand in Hyderabad. Plan a food stop between visits to places like the Charminar area.

Busy Timings and Days to Visit Hyderabad
