Mysore City Tour

The name Mysore comes from 'Mysuru', which was taken from Mahishasura, the demon killed by Goddess Chamundeshwari Devi on top of the Chamundi Hills. From that time on, the day has been celebrated as the win of good over evil. Devotees pray to Chamundeshwari Devi with deep faith at her temple on top of the Chamundi Hills. Mysore is widely known as the 'City of Palaces' because many large palaces were built across the Mysore kingdom.

How the city grew

Under Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, Mysore spread beyond the walls of the fort and grew very quickly. Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV developed many parts of the city. He built many fine palaces, wide roads and beautiful buildings, along with rose gardens and elegant parks. Today Mysore is a modern Indian city that still has its historic charm.

What Mysore is famous for

  • Sandalwood
  • Incense sticks
