In Madurai, the Meenakshi Amman temple with its tall painted gopurams is the centre of the old city. The Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal and the Gandhi Memorial Museum are nearby. Best time to go
October to March has the most comfortable weather. April to June is very hot on the plains and along the coast. The north-east monsoon brings rain to this region from October to December, and the Rameshwaram ferry and island roads can be affected by storms. The Chithirai festival in Madurai, in April or May, draws huge crowds.
How to choose the right package
If you are already in Madurai, a one-day trip is the simplest choice. Rameshwaram is about 170 km and Kanyakumari about 245 km from Madurai, so both are long days. From Bangalore, pick the bus for value or the train for comfort. The flight tour from Hyderabad saves about two days of travel.
