Places you will visit
In Ooty, most tours stop at the Ooty Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake and Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris. West of town are the lake and falls at Pykara. Coonoor is quieter, with Sim's Park, the Dolphin's Nose viewpoint and wide tea estates. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the toy train, runs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Kodaikanal, visitors walk or cycle around Kodaikanal Lake and enjoy the valley views from Coakers Walk, Pillar Rocks and Bryant Park.
Best time to go
October to June is the main season. April to June is the busiest stretch, as people escape the heat of the plains, and Ooty holds its flower show in May. December and January bring cold nights and frosty mornings in Ooty. From June to September the rain brings mist and fewer tourists, though roads can be slow.
How to choose the right package
From Bangalore, two days by bus is enough for Mysore and Ooty. Allow three days to add Coonoor. Kodaikanal is a long drive from Ooty, so combined trips need four or five days. The forest roads through Bandipur and Mudumalai close to traffic at night, and tours plan around this. A private car gives more freedom for families, while the bus is kinder on the budget. From Hyderabad or Chennai, pick the train for elders or the flight to save time. Tourist vehicles entering the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal may need a Tamil Nadu e-pass.
