Coorg Madikeri Tour Packages from GoldBox Holidays take you into the coffee hills of Kodagu in south-west Karnataka. Coorg is the popular name of the district, and Madikeri is its hill-top headquarters town, so most trips use Madikeri as their base. Visitors come for coffee and pepper estates, misty viewpoints, waterfalls, Tibetan monasteries and the warm hospitality of the Kodava people. The river Kaveri rises here at Talakaveri. This category has nine packages from Bangalore and Mysore. Most go by private car, and there is one budget bus day trip from Mysore. Choose from one day to five days, with Mysore or Ooty added on some tours.

Places you will visit

In Madikeri town, Raja's Seat is the classic sunset viewpoint, set in a garden just south of the old Madikeri Fort. The fort and the Omkareshwara temple are close by. Abbey Falls lies about 8 km from town, reached by a short walk down steps through coffee and spice plantations. Towards Kushalnagar, the Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe, often called the Golden Temple, is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. Dubare Elephant Camp on the Kaveri and the bamboo island park of Nisargadhama are nearby. Talakaveri, in the Brahmagiri hills, and the Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala are holy stops for pilgrims. Tours that include Mysore add Mysore Palace and Brindavan Gardens.

Best time to go

October to March is the best time, with cool and clear days. March and April are warmer, and the coffee plants often flower after the first showers. June to September brings very heavy rain. The waterfalls are full then, but some roads and trails can be slippery or closed. Long weekends get busy, so book early.

How to choose the right package

Madikeri is about 250 km from Bangalore, a drive of five to six hours, so plan at least two days from there. Mysore is about 120 km away, close enough for a day trip. A car is the easiest way to move between viewpoints, estates and falls on small hill roads. Add Mysore for palaces and gardens, or Ooty and Coonoor for a longer hill break. Frequently asked questions

Are Coorg and Madikeri the same place?

Not exactly. Coorg (Kodagu) is the whole district, and Madikeri is its main town. Most sightseeing is within an hour or so of Madikeri.

Is Coorg suitable for elders?

Yes, if you travel by car. Places like Abbey Falls involve steps, so elders can enjoy the viewpoints and the monastery instead.

What can I buy in Madikeri?

Coorg coffee, spices, honey and homemade fruit wines are common buys in the town's shops.
