Places to Visit in Hyderabad for One Day

Best Tourist Places & Itinerary

Only have one day in Hyderabad? You can still see the city's best side if you plan by area. The Old City, Golconda and Hussain Sagar sit in a rough line from south to west to centre, so one smooth route covers the highlights. Below you will find a ready one-day plan, a Friday version for when museums are shut, and a list of 30 places sorted by area so you can swap stops to suit your interests.

Best one-day Hyderabad plan

Time Stop Why
9:00 AM Charminar and Mecca Masjid Beat the crowd and the midday heat at the city's icon
10:00 AM Chowmahalla Palace Royal halls of the Nizams, a short walk from Charminar
11:30 AM Salar Jung Museum World-famous art collection, 10 minutes away by road
1:30 PM Lunch Try Hyderabadi biryani in the old city or on the way west
3:00 PM Golconda Fort Climb up for views as the afternoon cools down
5:30 PM Qutb Shahi Tombs (if time) or drive to Birla Mandir Tombs are close to the fort; Birla Mandir gives a dusk view of the lake
7:00 PM Hussain Sagar, Lumbini Park or Necklace Road Lake views, boat ride to the Buddha statue, laser show
8:30 PM Dinner, or shopping at Laad Bazaar Bangles, pearls and late-night food in the old city

Timings are approximate. Golconda's sound and light show starts around 6:30 or 7 PM. If you want to see it, stay at the fort and skip the lake that evening.

If you visit on a Friday

Salar Jung Museum, Chowmahalla Palace and the Nizam's Museum at Purani Haveli usually close on Fridays. On a Friday, spend the morning at Charminar, Mecca Masjid and Laad Bazaar. Then go to the Nehru Zoological Park before lunch. Keep the afternoon for Golconda Fort and end at Hussain Sagar.

If you visit on a Monday

The zoo is closed on Mondays, but the museums are open. The main plan above works well.

If you are staying near Hitech City

Start with Golconda and the Qutb Shahi Tombs in the morning, go to Charminar and Salar Jung Museum around midday, and return west for sunset at Durgam Cheruvu and an evening at Shilparamam.

30 places to choose from, by area

Use this list to change the plan. Places in the same area can be combined easily.

Old City, around Charminar

  • Charminar (45 minutes): The 1591 monument with four minarets that stands for Hyderabad. Climb up for a view of the busy streets below.
  • Mecca Masjid (30 minutes): A huge mosque next to Charminar, famous for bricks made with soil from Mecca in its central arch. Dress modestly and avoid prayer hours.
  • Laad Bazaar (1 hour): The bangle street west of Charminar. Lac bangles with coloured stones are the thing to buy.
  • Chowmahalla Palace (1.5 to 2 hours): Palace complex where the Nizams held court. See the Khilwat durbar hall, the chandeliers and the old cars. Read our Chowmahalla Palace guide.
  • Purani Haveli (1 hour): An old palace that is now home to the Nizam's Museum. It shows gifts and personal items of the last Nizam.
  • Salar Jung Museum (2 hours): Three generations of the Salar Jung family collected art from around the world. Highlights include the Veiled Rebecca and the musical clock. See the Salar Jung Museum page.
  • Paigah Tombs (1 hour): Marble tombs of the Paigah nobles in Pisal Banda, about 4 km from Charminar. The lattice and inlay work is very fine.
  • Falaknuma Palace (by booking): A hilltop palace about 5 km from Charminar, now a Taj hotel. You need a stay, a meal booking or a tour slot to enter.
  • Nehru Zoological Park (3 hours): A large zoo near Bahadurpura with a lion safari and nocturnal animal house. Go early in the day when animals are active.

Golconda side

  • Golconda Fort (2 to 3 hours): The Qutb Shahi fort on a granite hill, known for its acoustics and water systems. Wear good shoes for the climb. Details on our Golconda Fort page.
  • Qutb Shahi Tombs (1 hour): Royal tombs with large domes in a garden setting at Ibrahim Bagh. Only a few minutes from the fort.
  • Taramati Baradari (30 minutes): A Qutb Shahi pavilion now used as a cultural venue and resort. Stop by if you are passing on the way to Gandipet.
  • Gandipet Lake (30 minutes): Also called Osman Sagar, a reservoir west of the city. Good for a short drive and the sunset.
  • Chilkur Balaji Temple (1 to 2 hours): Known as the Visa Balaji temple, near Osman Sagar. It is busy on weekends, so go early.

Hussain Sagar and central Hyderabad

  • Hussain Sagar Lake (1 hour): A 16th-century lake with a large Buddha statue standing in the middle. Boats leave from Lumbini Park and Eat Street.
  • Tank Bund (30 minutes): The lakeside road with statues of Telugu cultural figures. Walk it in the evening breeze.
  • Necklace Road (1 hour): Lakeside promenade with eateries and open lawns. It links NTR Gardens and Sanjeevaiah Park.
  • Lumbini Park (1 hour): Small park with the boat jetty, a musical fountain and an evening laser show.
  • NTR Gardens (1 hour): A 36-acre park with a toy train and rides for children. It sits between Lumbini Park and Necklace Road.
  • Jalavihar (2 to 3 hours): A water park on Necklace Road with slides and a wave pool. Carry swimwear.
  • Birla Mandir (45 minutes): White marble Venkateswara temple on a hill above the lake. Visit near sunset for the view.
  • Birla Planetarium (1 to 2 hours): Sky shows and a science museum next to Birla Mandir. Check show times on arrival.
  • Snow World (2 hours): Indoor snow play area on Lower Tank Bund Road. Warm clothes are provided.

West Hyderabad and the IT area

  • Shilparamam (2 hours): A crafts village in Madhapur with stalls from many states. Good for gifts.
  • Durgam Cheruvu (45 minutes): A lake ringed by rocks with a lit cable bridge. Best after sunset.
  • KBR National Park (1 hour): A forest park in Jubilee Hills with a walking track and many peacocks.
  • Botanical Gardens (1 to 2 hours): Large green garden at Kothaguda near Kondapur. Pleasant in the morning or late afternoon.

Further out

  • Sanghi Temple (1 hour): Hilltop temple about 35 km away, near Ramoji Film City. Combine it with a Ramoji day rather than a city day.
  • Mount Opera (half day): Theme park and resort on the Vijayawada highway. Better on a separate day.
  • Maula Ali Dargah (1 hour): A hilltop shrine in Malkajgiri reached by steps. Worth it if you are staying in Secunderabad.

Tips for a one-day trip

  • Start by 9 AM. Most monuments open between 9 and 10 AM and close around 5 to 5:30 PM.
  • Book a cab for the day. Distances between the Old City, Golconda and the lake are 8 to 12 km each, and traffic is slow.
  • Use the metro to reach the Old City or the lake from far suburbs. See the Hyderabad metro route map.
  • Carry water, a cap and cash for small entry fees and parking.
