Explore the splendid joy of travelling!

Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana and one of the largest cities in India. It grew around the Musi river and Hussain Sagar lake, and today it spreads far beyond the old walled city. For anyone new to the city, the long list of area names can be confusing. This page groups the main localities by region, lists stations and bus stands, and then gives an A to Z list of Hyderabad areas you can scan quickly.

Hyderabad at a glance

  • State: Telangana. Hyderabad was also the shared capital of Andhra Pradesh until 2 June 2024.
  • Twin city: Secunderabad sits just north of Hussain Sagar. Most people treat the two as one city.
  • Founded: 1591, by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The Qutb Shahi kings and later the Nizams ruled from here.
  • Civic bodies: In 2025 and 2026 the state merged many surrounding towns into the city and then split the larger area into three corporations: Greater Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. So an area's official zone may have changed recently.
  • Known for: Charminar, Golconda Fort, biryani, pearls, and a large IT and pharma industry in the west of the city.

Tips for finding your way

  • Share a nearby landmark along with the area name. Auto and cab drivers know landmarks better than colony names.
  • Many areas have "Old" and "New" parts, such as Old Malakpet and New Malakpet. Check which one you need.
  • Some names on this list are markets or streets inside a bigger area. Laad Bazaar, Pathargatti and Gulzar House, for example, are all around Charminar.
  • Traffic is heavy between 8 and 11 AM and between 5 and 9 PM. Use the metro for long east-west or north-south trips at these hours.
