Tourist Attractions in Warangal
Warangal is a historic city in north-east Telangana, about 145 km from Hyderabad. It was the capital of the Kakatiya kings from the 12th to the 14th century. They left behind grand stone temples, a large fort and many lakes. Warangal and its twin town Hanamkonda are a good base for heritage lovers, pilgrims and nature trips to the forests and lakes nearby.
Top places to visit in Warangal
The city sights can be seen in one day. Ramappa and Laknavaram need a second day or an early start.
- 1000 Pillars Temple - a Kakatiya temple in Hanamkonda with finely carved pillars and a large stone Nandi.
- Bhadrakali Temple - an old goddess temple on a hill beside a lake, very busy during Navaratri.
- Warangal Fort - the ruins of the Kakatiya capital, with the famous stone arches known as Kakatiya Kala Thoranam.
- Ramappa Temple - a 13th-century Shiva temple at Palampet, about 65 km away. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its sculpture and light bricks said to float on water.

- Kaleshwaram Temple - a Shiva temple where the Godavari and Pranahita rivers meet, a longer day trip from Warangal.
Best time to visit Warangal
October to February is the best time, with cool mornings that suit temple walks and lake visits. The monsoon from July to September fills the lakes and makes Laknavaram very green. March to June is very hot. Bathukamma and Dasara in September or October are celebrated in a big way here. The Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, a huge tribal fair, is held near Warangal every two years.
How to reach Warangal
The nearest airport with regular flights is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, about 170 km away. Warangal and Kazipet Junction are the two main railway stations, with many trains from Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Vijayawada and Delhi. TGSRTC buses run often from Hyderabad and take about 3 to 4 hours. Hire a taxi to reach Ramappa and Laknavaram, as buses there are less frequent.
