Tourist Attractions in Tirupati
Tirupati is a temple city in the south of Andhra Pradesh, close to the Tamil Nadu border. It sits at the foot of the Tirumala hills, where the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple stands. This is one of the most visited Hindu temples in the world. Millions of pilgrims come each year for darshan of Lord Balaji. The town below the hills also has many old temples, so most visitors spend one or two days in the area.
Top places to visit in Tirupati
Plan the Tirumala darshan first, then add the temples in and around Tirupati town.
- Tirupati Balaji Temple - the main shrine of Lord Venkateswara on Tirumala hill. Darshan tickets should be booked in advance.
- Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple - the temple of Goddess Padmavathi, the consort of Lord Venkateswara, at Tiruchanur, a few km from the town.
- Srinivasa Mangapuram - the Kalyana Venkateswara temple, linked to the story of the Lord's wedding.
- Kapila Theertham - a Shiva temple at the foot of the hills with a waterfall and holy pond, full of water after the rains.
- Govindaraja Swamy Temple - a large old temple in the centre of Tirupati town.
- Chandragiri Fort - a fort and palace of the Vijayanagara period, a short drive from the city.
Best time to visit Tirupati
September to February has the most comfortable weather. The Tirumala Brahmotsavam, held for nine days around September or October, is the biggest festival of the year. Vaikunta Ekadasi in December or January also draws huge crowds. April to June is very hot in the town, though Tirumala on the hill is a little cooler. Weekends, holidays and summer vacations bring the longest queues.
How to reach Tirupati
Tirupati Airport is at Renigunta, about 15 km from the town. It has flights from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and other cities. Tirupati Main railway station is in the town centre, and Renigunta Junction nearby handles more trains. Buses from Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Vijayawada reach Tirupati bus stand. From Tirupati to Tirumala, APSRTC buses and taxis use the ghat road. Many devotees also climb on foot by the Alipiri steps or the shorter Srivari Mettu path.
