Tourist Attractions in Srisailam

Srisailam is a holy town on a hill in the Nallamala forest, in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, close to the Telangana border. It overlooks the Krishna river and the Srisailam dam. The town is home to the Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy temple. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and also a Shakti Peetha of Goddess Bhramaramba. This rare combination brings pilgrims from all over India.

Top places to visit in Srisailam

Most people stay one night so they can see the temple and the spots around town without rushing.

  • Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple - the main temple with the Jyotirlinga and the Bhramaramba shrine inside tall stone walls.
  • Sakshi Ganapathi Temple - pilgrims stop here to "register" their visit with Lord Ganesha before or after darshan.
  • Pathala Ganga - a bathing spot on the Krishna river below the town, reached by steps or ropeway.
  • Shikaresvara Temple - a temple at the highest point of the hills, with wide forest views.
  • Phaladhara Panchadhara - a quiet spot with natural springs in a small valley, linked to Adi Shankaracharya.
  • Srisailam Dam - a large dam on the Krishna, very impressive when the gates are open after heavy rain.

Best time to visit Srisailam

October to February is the best time, with cool weather in the forest. Maha Shivaratri, usually in February or March, is the biggest festival, and Karthika month in November is also busy. The monsoon makes the forest green and may open the dam gates. Summer days are hot.
