Tourist Attractions in Ooty
Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is a hill town in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, close to the borders of Karnataka and Kerala. It sits at more than 2,000 metres in the Nilgiri Mountains, so it stays cool even in summer. The British built it as a summer retreat, and many old cottages, churches and gardens remain. Families come for the cool air, tea estates, lakes and the famous toy train.
Top places to visit in Ooty
Keep at least two days for Ooty. One day for the town and one day for the lakes, falls and forest drives around it.
- Ooty Botanical Garden - a large terraced garden with old trees, a glass house and the yearly flower show in May.
- Ooty Lake - a man-made lake in town with pedal and row boats.
- Doddabetta Peak - the highest point in the Nilgiris, with a viewpoint over the hills.
- Pykara - a lake and waterfall area on the Mysore road, good for boating.
- Naduvattam - a quiet spot with tea estates and misty views on the Gudalur road.
- Mudumalai Forest - a tiger reserve at the foot of the hills with jeep and bus safaris.
- Bandipur Forest - the Karnataka side of the same forest belt, which you cross when driving from Mysore.
Best time to visit Ooty
March to June is the main season. The plains are hot, but Ooty stays pleasant. The summer festival and flower show happen in May, so expect crowds and higher hotel rates. September to November is green and quieter. December and January are cold, and mornings can drop close to freezing. The heavy monsoon months of July and August can cause landslides on hill roads.
How to reach Ooty
The nearest airport is Coimbatore, about 85 to 90 km away. The nearest big railway station is Mettupalayam. From there the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train climbs to Ooty in about 5 hours. Book toy train seats well in advance. By road, Ooty is about 270 to 290 km from Bangalore via Mysore and the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests. Forest check posts on this route close at night. Vehicles entering the Nilgiris may need an e-pass.
