Tourist Attractions in Nagarjuna Sagar

Nagarjunasagar is a dam town on the Krishna river, on the border of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. It is about 150 to 165 km south-east of Hyderabad. The Nagarjuna Sagar dam, built in the 1950s and 1960s, is one of the largest stone masonry dams in the world. The area is also an important Buddhist heritage site. It makes a good one or two day trip from Hyderabad for families and history lovers.

Top places to visit in Nagarjunasagar

Start with the dam and then take the boat to the island museum.

  • Nagarjunakonda Museum - a museum on an island in the reservoir, reached by boat. It holds Buddhist sculptures and relics that were moved here before the valley was flooded.
  • Nagarjuna Sagar Dam - the huge dam wall and view points. When the crest gates open after heavy rain, it is a grand sight.
  • Buddhavanam - a large Buddhist heritage theme park on the Telangana side, with a stupa and gardens.
  • Ethipothala Falls - a waterfall a short drive away on the Andhra Pradesh side, best during and after the monsoon.

Best time to visit Nagarjunasagar

August to February is the best time. The reservoir is full after the monsoon, the falls are flowing, and the weather is mild. The dam gates usually open only in years with good rain. Summer is very hot, and the boat service to the island may be stopped when water levels are low.
