Tourist Attractions in Mysore
Mysore, officially Mysuru, is a heritage city in the south of Karnataka, about 145 km south-west of Bangalore. It was the seat of the Wadiyar kings, and their palaces still shape the city. Mysore is known for silk sarees, sandalwood, Mysore Pak and the grand Dasara festival. It is clean, calm and easy to explore, which makes it a favourite for families and school trips.
Top places to visit in Mysore
Two days is a good length for Mysore and its nearby sights, including Srirangapatna on the Bangalore road.
- Mysore Palace - the royal palace in the city centre. On Sundays and festival nights it is lit up with thousands of bulbs.
- Sri Chamundeshwari Temple - the temple of the city's guardian goddess on top of Chamundi Hills, with the big Nandi statue on the way up.
- Brindavan Gardens - terraced gardens below the KRS dam, best in the evening for the musical fountain.
- St. Philomena's Church - a tall Gothic-style church with twin spires.
- Jaganmohan Palace - an older palace that now holds an art gallery with royal paintings.
- Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Park - one of the oldest zoos in India, close to the palace.
- Srirangapatna - the island town of Tipu Sultan, with the Ranganatha Swamy temple, the Gumbaz and his summer palace.
Best time to visit Mysore
October to March is the best season, with pleasant days and cool evenings. The most famous time is Dasara, a ten-day festival in September or October. The palace is lit every night, and the last day has the Jamboo Savari elephant procession. Book hotels early for Dasara because rooms fill fast. April and May are warm, and June to September brings moderate rain.
How to reach Mysore
Most travellers fly into Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore, about 170 km away, and continue by road or train. Mysore has a small airport of its own with limited flights. Mysuru Junction railway station is in the city centre and has many daily trains from Bangalore, some taking around 2 hours. By road, the Bangalore to Mysore expressway makes the drive about 3 hours. KSRTC buses run very often from Bangalore.
