Tourist Attractions in Allagadda

Allagadda is a small town in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh, on the highway between Kurnool and Kadapa. The town is known for its stone carving craft, and local artisans make temple idols and sculptures. For most travellers, Allagadda is the gateway to Ahobilam, a very holy Narasimha shrine. Ahobilam lies about 25 to 30 km away in the Nallamala hills.

Top places to visit in Allagadda

Plan at least one full day for Ahobilam. Visiting all its shrines can take two days.

  • Ahobilam Temple - the temple complex of the nine forms of Lord Narasimha, called Nava Narasimha. Lower Ahobilam is easy to reach by road. Upper Ahobilam and the forest shrines need a walk or a jeep ride.
  • Jwala Narasimha and Ugra Stambham - trek spots in the hills above Ahobilam, linked to the story of Lord Narasimha and Prahlada. The paths are steep and rocky.

Other famous temples in the region include Mahanandi near Nandyal and Yaganti near Banaganapalle.

Best time to visit Allagadda

November to February is the best time for the Ahobilam treks, with cooler weather. Summer is very hot on the rocks. In the monsoon the streams fill up, and some forest paths can be slippery. The Ahobilam Brahmotsavam, usually in February or March, is the main festival.
