About Ramoji Film City
Know more about the place you visit
Ramoji Film City is a large film studio complex on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway, near Hayathnagar on the eastern edge of Hyderabad. It spreads over about 2,000 acres. Guinness World Records lists it as the largest film studio complex in the world. Many Telugu, Hindi and other language films and TV shows are shot here. For visitors, it is a full-day outing and one of the most popular family trips from Hyderabad.
History
The studio was started in 1996 by Ramoji Rao, the media businessman who founded the Eenadu group. His idea was simple. A film maker could arrive with a script and leave with a finished film, because everything needed for a shoot would be in one place. Over the years the campus added ready-made sets, hotels and tourist attractions. The huge sets built for the Baahubali films are now one of the favourite stops for tourists.
What to see and do
- Take the guided bus tour past film sets such as city streets, a railway station, an airport, palaces and temples.
- Walk through the Baahubali set and take photos on the grand stage.
- See how special effects and camera tricks work at the Ramoji Movie Magic studio.
- Watch the live stage and stunt shows held during the day.
- Visit Wings, the bird park, and the butterfly park with children.
- Let kids play at Fundustan, and try the Borasura walk-through if you like a scary thrill.
- Try adventure activities at Sahas, which has its own ticket.
Best time to visit
October to February is the most pleasant time, as most of the tour is outdoors. During the festive season, usually from October to November, the campus stays open later with lights, parades and evening events. Summer days in April and May are very hot, so carry water and a cap. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends and holidays.
How to reach
Ramoji Film City is about 30 to 35 km from the city centre. From Nampally (Hyderabad) or Secunderabad railway station, the drive takes one to one and a half hours, depending on traffic. TGSRTC city buses run towards the studio from points such as Koti and LB Nagar. LB Nagar is the nearest metro station, about 12 km away. From there you can take a cab or auto. The studio also runs a paid pick-up bus from some city points. A private car or a tour bus is the easiest option for families.
Tips for visitors
- Plan a full day. Reach close to opening time so you do not miss the main tour.
- Book tickets online in advance, especially for weekends and holidays.
- Child tickets are based on the child's height, not age.
- Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking between sets.
- Food is sold inside, but prices are higher than in the city.
- If you want more time, you can stay overnight at one of the hotels inside the campus.
